Reflection on Personality Type

be

After taking the personality type test, I find myself belonging to ISTJ type, an introverted sensor, thinker, and judger. According to the general description of this type, ISTJ people are serious, responsible, and determined in reaching their goals. They are often detail-oriented, realistic, and sometimes stubborn. Though some of the words or attributes are not often connected with my personality, most of the descriptions fit me well. The ISTJ analysis does help explain my working and studying habits as well as my future career choices.

The first word “I” represents that I am an introverted person. In daily life, I am more inclined to listening and analyzing what people are talking about, instead of talking and expressing myself. Few people regard me as a public speaker, and I prefer not to be on the stage, too. Compared to be at the center of people’s attention, I would rather be off-stage to observe and think. During my leisure time, I love reading books or watching movies by myself or with several close friends. I keep a diary and reflect upon myself on a daily basis. In a word, I concentrate on myself, thus I can be labeled as an introvert.

The second word “S” means that I am a person relying more on sensing than on intuition. In fact, the result shows that I am not an absolute sensor person, but I score more on the “sense” indicator. When making a decision, I rarely trust my intuition. I trust what I see, what I hear, what I smell, what I taste, and what I touch. For example, we are often faced with a situation where we are told to open a box. It can be a real box, and I will rely on shaking the box to hear and smelling to guess what is inside before I open the box, rather than listening to my intuition. It can also be a metaphorical box, like when we are choosing a career or even a course. In this case, I will sense and analyze whether it is suitable for me, but will not follow my intuition.

The third word “T” tells that I prefer thinking to feeling. In the case of studying, mathematics and physics attract me more than arts and literature, since I love logic and logical reasoning. I often provide logical answers and think before I do. There are many things that cannot be explained by logical thinking and I am aware of that. However, in daily life, I try not to be overwhelmed by feelings and not to be blinded by them. When encountered with difficult decisions from choosing a career to choosing socks, I prefer thinking and evaluating the supposed outcome rather than simply depending on feelings to decide. Even for a pair of socks, I usually evaluate whether they can keep me warm rather than whether I like their color.

The fourth word “J” means that I rely on judgment rather than perceiving. I do not think this implies that I am a judgmental person. This dimensional personality means that I love planning and controlling my own life. In my daily life, I have always kept a schedule book, listing all things that I need to do in a day or a week. Planning gives me a sense of security. Detailed plans always help me to be punctual, reliable, and not procrastinate. Free lifestyle and plenty of options do have their attractiveness. For me, it is self-discipline that makes me feel free and safe.

As for career-choosing, just like what is revealed by this ISTJ analysis, I would like to have a career that does not require much public speaking but does require logical thinking and detail-orientation. To combine these with my interest, I want to be an accountant. My personality fits this occupation well, and I believe that I will be good at it after properly training. Although reality often comes different than supposed, but, at least, this personality analysis helps me to find my potential strengths and weaknesses in work. I can be organized, detail-oriented, careful, responsible, logical, realistic, pragmatic, punctual and stable. But I can also be unwilling to change and try new things, not open to new ideas and methods, not creative, stubborn and insensitive. Therefore, no matter what occupation I will choose in the future, I should preserve my advantages and overcome my weaknesses as to become a better person.
