In The Case for Working with Your Hands, Mathew Crawford compared several working experiences which generate different ideas and make him think what a good job is. He described the job in the office where he wrote summaries for articles a miserable experience that devalues his knowledge. To reach a required number of abstracts, he has to write without further understanding of each article. The work amount leaves him less time to think and less concentration to the work. What’s more, his manager just points out indifferent mistakes because the manager “cultivates a lack of commitment to the work” (9). Thus, Crawford feels ‘trapped’ in the work. On the contrary, his work at a self-employed motorcycle shop, where he works manually and practically, differ the working experience at the office. It creates more progress as he encountered challenges that engage with different variables and “require complex thinking” that he totally devoted himself to the work (6). Also, he works in a collective community with experienced workers to learn from (6). As a result, Crawford thinks it is a good job that makes him happy.

In Richard Kraut’s Prolegomenon to Flourishing, he introduced ‘human flourishing’ that good for people with “cognitive, affective, sensory and social powers” (137). That is to say, people are not only physically well but also maintain a more psychological well-being with these components. Kraut also explained the bad jobs which are “mindless, repetitive, emotionally stifling, socially isolating, physically debilitating tasks…” (142). The office work fails to flourish Crawford, in this sense, because he cannot experience cognitive and sensory in writing. He is mindless because of the amount of work, representing the lack of cognitive power. He is ‘trapped’ in the paradox in his working, which is a lack of sensory power. On the other hand, Crawford is flourishing in the manual work at the motorcycle shop as he is highly cognitive and social in the work. The complex thinking to solve the problems he encountered in working fulfills the cognitive power. His active being in the community to learn from the experienced workers fulfills the social power. Those powers promote his feeling of happiness in the job.

Another factor that affects a good life is technology. In “Why can’t we read anymore? Or, can books save us from what digital does to our brains?” Hugh McGuire explained his idea of well-being as avoiding digital’s ruins to our concentration to our life. McGuire shared his problem to concentrate on things which resulted in reading fewer books and eagerly seeking out on digital devices. The reason he focused on the book is that reading needs the most concentration, but human brains are used to digital dopamine to hardly focus on anything except the internet nowadays. He listed some solutions, to avoid devices, to read no articles on devices and to read books instead. In this way, he adapted to reading books and feels great again.

McGuire's failure to read books can refer to Kraut's idea of flourishing. Technology weakens cognitive and social power that hindered the development to these powers. The developmentalism, as Kraut's explained, is that the human is flourishing with an exercise of "cognitive, social, affective, and physical skills" (Kraut 141). Technology here serves to mess up with people's established development of those powers. It gets in the cognitive power because it stops people mindful of the understanding of certain things. Technology provides brief messages and articles and to make people think less and concentrate less while reading words, sentences, and paragraphs in books. It gets in the social power because it breaks the exercise of social skills that make conversation soul to soul. Instead, technology provides people instant chat and post on social networks that undermine the conversation. Thus, it is important to get back to reading as a book is flourishing for people for the development of these powers, especially cognitively.

Paul Camenisch

Paul Camenisch talks about evaluation of business in regard to the moral function and human flourishing in Business Ethics: on Getting to the Heart of the Matter. He defines business whose products and services serve and contribute to human flourishing as moral, while business whose products and services obstruct human flourishing as questionable and immoral (64). In other words, evaluation on the function of the business should focus on its function to human flourishing regardless of its making of profits and position in markets.

One of the products that contribute to human flourishing is Google Docs, which is used by most people in writing and sharing new ideas. Though it is not a product that is physical owned by people, it serves people with flourishing on their exercise with cognitive, affective, sensory, and social power. Google Docs creates a word editing platform, offers different templates to choose from which could be changed by the editors’ own favor of design. It ensures the creativeness and the development of sensory power. The ability to save every change to the documents is also convenient for people to really focus on mindful writing instead of worrying about losing in case of any technical problems. It helps develop the cognitive power since it people can focus on the writing. The sharing function also makes it easier for group working, which helps establish social power. What’s more, it is an online editing platform that everyone can use with the connection to the internet without paying for it installing on the computer, so that people can access to it through public computers. The easy access provides benefits that flourishing people with joy and relaxed to use, instead of focusing on making profits from it. Therefore, this product is morally functioned to serve people for a good life.
