To be successful is one of my dreams in my life. I have other dreams of course, but to be successful is the most important I think. I have made a lot of efforts on attempts to achieve success and some of the effects did earn my success but the successful joy last for a while and then fade away. I am a hardworking and pre-mature kid in primary and junior school and love competition and try to be No.1 in the class in every aspect, but when I won the prize medals home, I find the new semester is approaching and I have to work harder and keep trying. I have never found out what success is and whether there is an ever-lasting success until I have watched and reflected on the talks on TED.

Is there a definition of “success”? There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. There are so many dimensions and so many criteria to measure success. For a building, it is safe to call it a success, if it meets the construction expectation and completes on time. But for a human, success is a continuous journey. How can we judge someone if he or she is successful or not in just a case or dimension? In China, there is an ancient proverb goes like “you cannot judge a person before a person is in the coffin” or “praise no one before he is dead”. Therefore, success need to be judged by a long-term prospective.

Even though we need to judge success in the long-term prospective, it is still very difficult to decide success. Success can be achieved by different standards. It is same with the pursuit of happiness. Are rich people happier that poor people? Is someone who drives a Ferrari more successful than a dad picking up his kid hand in hand? We simply cannot judge. Success is matter of relativity and varies under different circumstances. Success is the pursuit of peaceful mind on self-satisfaction in knowing what you made effort to do the best of you can do, as Coach John Wooden said.

People always say that success cannot be explained very clearly, but I believe the definition of success is simple and clear: to achieve your goal no matter what it is. To define success, we firstly need to determine the goal. Without a goal, there is no need to judge on success. The reason why success is hard to define or why success is easily misunderstood is the unclear goal. In other words, the goals are relative and hard to measure and make success hard to define. The expected goals are variable with time and situation. Thus, the definition of success is variable with time and situation. To achieve a goal is called success. But not achieve a goal cannot be simply addressed as failure. As a speaker of TED talks mentioned, a near win situation often more frequent and in that case, we need a kinder and long-term prospective on the definition of success.

Success is individual and its standard varies with different people. For example, if you want to save a million dollars by this year, and at the end, you have ten thousand dollars short. Of course the goal is not successfully achieved but many people would say 900000 dollars per years a great deal of money, it is successful enough because their goal may be half million per year. In most cases, people measure other people’s success based on their own standards. Some believe it is successful, some sniff at it. Some believe in hedonism, and some pursue fame and wealth.

      The definition of success can be narrow or wide. We can be quite successful in an area but a total mess in another. Genius as Da Vanchi who is so versatile and talented might has a failed marriage and children issue. A person who is self-sufficient and courageous to face the reality is what I think to be a successful person.
